Glenn R. Umberger Jr. was elected as Pennsylvania State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on June 20, 2015 at Pennsylvania’s 96th State Convention.

     Mr. Umberger has served in numerous Officer and Chairmanship positions at the Post, District and State levels since joining the Veterans of Foreign Wars in November, 1993. Presently he serves as the State Parliamentarian, State By-Laws Chairman and the Eastern Conference Jr Vice Chairman. Nationally, he has served on the Military Services Committee during 2008-11, appointed to the Awards and Citations Committee for 2019-24 and has been a member of numerous committees at National Conventions. His VFW Awards include; All-State Post Commander in 2006-07, the District 16 J. Robert Redfern Memorial Award in 2010, National Aide-de-Camp in 2006-07 and 2019-20, National Deputy Chief of Staff in 2007-08 and Assistant Inspector General in 2018-19. He has also received the Chapel of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award and the Pennsylvania Commendation Medal.

     Mr. Umberger began his military career on May 3, 1985, enlisting as a Private with the 6th Battalion 68th Armor Regiment at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. Private Umberger served with Company C, 6/68th Armor Regiment until his mobilization with the 344th Data Processing Unit, for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in November of 1990. During his mobilization, Corporal Umberger served under the 10th Personnel Command in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and then the 22nd Support Command in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Upon completion of the deployment in June 1991, Corporal Umberger served in various assignments at the Battalion and Brigade levels, subsequently being promoted to Sergeant in July 1992 and Staff Sergeant in May 1998. On March 9th, 2001 Staff Sergeant Umberger accepted a Direct Appointment as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Medical Department as a Medical Service Corps Officer. First Lieutenant Umberger assumed command of Headquarters Company, 338th Medical Brigade in October 2003. Upon completion of command, he was promoted to Captain in August 2006 and then served in various staff positions at Battalion and Brigade levels, to include commanding a Medical Readiness Exercise in the Dominican Republic. In July 2013, Captain Umberger transferred to the Army Reserve Legal Command. In October, 2015 he was promoted to Major, and later served as the S-2 for the 804th Medical Brigade until his retirement on December 1st, 2018.

     Mr. Umberger began his civilian career with the Department of the Army in December 1991 as a GS-6, Unit Administrator, for Company A, 6/68th Armor Regiment. Over the next several years he supported various units as a Unit Administrator until being promoted to GS-8, Staff Operations and Training Specialist with the 744th Military Police Battalion. In November 2010, Mr. Umberger was promoted to GS-10, Staff Operations and Training Specialist with Headquarters, 338th Medical Group. In August 2005, Mr. Umberger was promoted to GS-12 as the Supervisory Staff Administrator, Headquarters, 338th Medical Brigade. Then in August 2013, he was promoted to GS-13 as the Command Executive Officer with the Army Reserve Legal Command. In August 2020, he accepted his current position as a Regional Facility Operations Specialist with the 99th Readiness Division.

     Mr. Umberger’s military awards include; the Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with one Star, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with three Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal with Gold Hourglass and ‘M’ Devices, the Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral two, the Army Service Ribbon, the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal (Government of Kuwait), the Army Reserve Components Oversees Training Ribbon with numeral two and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Mr. Umberger’s civilian awards include the Superior Civilian Service Award, the Department of the Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service and the Department of the Army Patriotic Public Service Award.

     Mr. Umberger is a graduate of numerous military schools, to include; the Army Medical Department Officer Basic and Captain’s Career Courses, the Anti-Terrorism Officer Basic Course, the Security Manager’s Course and the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training for Trainers Course. Mr. Umberger is a 1990 graduate of Shippensburg University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and a 1991 graduate of the Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Academy. He is also a graduate of numerous civilian schools, to include; the Supervisor’s Development Course, Labor Relations for Supervisors, the Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor’s Course and the Army Basic Mediation Course.

     Mr. Umberger is involved with numerous civic and volunteer organizations, to include; Gold Legacy Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Past President of the Joint Pennsylvania War Veterans Council, Life Member of the Military Order of the Cooties, Pup Tent #99, Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Home for Children, Life Member of the Association of the United States Army, Patriot Endowment Life Member of the National Rifle Association, Member of the American Legion, Member of Rolling Thunder, Pennsylvania Chapter One, and Chairman of the Zoning Hearing Board for Schwenksville Borough, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
